Evaluation of crop insurance offered under the RES-RISK project in a study commissioned by 3ie

MIA is involved in an ongoing study commissioned by the 3ie (International Initiative on Impact Evaluation) on – Evaluation of community-based crop microinsurance for climate-related risks, offered to smallholder farmers and marginalized communities to enhance their resilience in flood prone areas in North Bihar – Vaishali district (Hajipur, Bidupur, Vaishali blocks) & Muzaffarpur district (Meenapur block) under the RES-RISK project.

The study aims to answer the questions –

  1. What factors affect voluntary uptake (demand) for agriculture insurance offered to smallholder farmers by CBMAS?
  2. Is there a business case for community-based crop insurance in terms of financial sustainability, scaling of the CBMAS and stakeholders’ interests?
  3.  How effective is community-based crop insurance in providing financial protection to insured farmers (timely and adequate payouts in case of losses)? and adequate payouts in case of losses)?
