The MIA Team

The Micro Insurance Academy is a project of Sarvajan Unnati Bodhini (SUB) Charitable Trust.

The lead trustee of SUB is Dharmendra Kumar, who joined in this endeavor by Naren N. Joshi and Sanjeev Kumar Bhanot.

With a lifelong experience within the insurance industry in India, Dharmendra Kumar is leading SUB with expertise, focus and vast knowledge of the benefits that insurance can bring to the poor. A convinced and committed disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and a keen observer and commentator of the development of insurance activities in the Indian subcontinent, Dharmendra Kumar has now shifted his attention from the study of the history of the insurance industry to involvement in the nascent microinsurance activity at the bottom of the pyramid in rural areas and amongst the urban poor. 

Naren N. Joshi has 36 years of experience with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), India’s largest government holding insurance company. He served at LIC in various positions until he retired as Executive Director in 1997. Post-retirement he was Chief Advisor to the Dutch “Financial Services MNC” / the ING Group, and later as Chief Representative of ING Insurance International. Currently he is the Non-Executive Director on the Board of ING Vysya Life Insurance Co., based in Bangalore, India. He has also served on the Board of Governors for ASIA-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association, and as nominee Director on various company Boards in the automotive, cement, steel and metal sectors in Atlanta, USA. Mr. Joshi is a member of the Academic Advisory Boards of Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) and the Jaipuria Institute of Management in India for their insurance-related programs. He also continues to be the Executive Director of FORTE - Foundation of Research, Training and Education in Insurance (set-up jointly by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ING Insurance International). He has participated and presented papers in several insurance seminars - both in India and abroad, which have been widely appreciated.

Sanjeev Kumar Bhanot holds a degree in Biology and Chemistry (BSc) and has learned traditional Naturopathy in New Delhi. Hailing from a small desert town called Dungargarh in Rajasthan he has travelled widely in India and the world, all the way to the alpine slopes of Switzerland. He is a trained yoga professional and therapist who has conducted several stress management sessions in Delhi, Geneva and elsewhere in Europe. He is the founder of Yogalife Foundation. Sanjeev has worked with international organizations like the UN, World Bank, UNHCR, the World Meteorological Organization and Deutsche Bank.

The Trustees of SUB are aided in their mission by the founding Chairman of the Micro Insurance Academy, Prof. Dr. David M. Dror. Prof. Dror is an internationally recognized authority in micro health insurance, whose reputation was gained through the conceptual framework he developed on ways to link poor communities with reinsurance (a concept he called “Social Re“) and the seminal volume Social Re Insurance: A New Approach to Sustainable Community Health Financing (with A. Preker; published by World Bank and ILO). David has extensive field experience working with grassroots groups in low-income countries. He holds a DBA (Magna cum Laude) and a PhD (Summa cum Laude). Denny John
Dy. Director Project Implementation

Mr. Denny John has over a decade of experience across various health domains, such as project management, hospital management, health services research, project evaluation, training, and advocacy. After receiving training under the WHO-SEARO India office supported “Training on Health Insurance” in 2006, he was involved in designing two microhealthinsurance projects; in Nanded and Mumbai. In 2008 his submission “Organisation of Mutuals” focusing on health insurance for urban poor had received the Best Plan Award at Prayas (Social Entrepreneurship Competition), SIES College of Management Sciences, Navi Mumbai. He has been invited as resource faculty for conducting training programs on microhealthinsurance organized by MOHFW, Govt of India, and Dept of Preventive and Social Medicine, Seth G S Medical College, Mumbai, where he conducted training for representatives from NGOs, government departments, and post-graduate medical students. In 2008 he was awarded the Incubation Support Award from UnLtd India, for supporting his work on microhealthinsurance for urban poor in Mumbai city.  From 2009-2011 he was involved as Co-Researcher for ‘Researching the transformative dimensions in the provision of the social health protection in urban Maharashtra’, along with researchers and faculty members from University of Antwerp, Belgium. He has publications in the domain of micro health insurance and social health protection in books, periodicals and peer-reviewed journals. In 2007 and 2008 he was awarded the Leaders Quest Fellowship Award by Leaders Quest Foundation, UK, for his contribution to the non-profit sector in India.

 

He has a Bachelor Degree in Physiotherapy from Mangalore University and Post-Graduate Diploma in Hospital Management (PGDHM) from IHMR, Jaipur. In 2009 he was awarded the NZAID Commonwealth Scholarship for Master of Public Health (MPH) course at University of Auckland, New Zealand. He has recently submitted his MPH dissertation on “Cost effectiveness analysis of community screening for glaucoma in India”. He has joined MIA as Dy Director-Project Implementation.

Yann Gelister
Project Officer

Yann Gelister after completing the European Microfinance Programme at the ULB University of Brussels, joined MIA's Bonn office as a Project Officer . Yann has worked previously with the Belgian cooperative (BRS) on the ongoing  development of social performance indicators (SPIs) for microinsurance. More recently, he carried out research on social performance in India, evaluating and testing the SPIs at Uplift Mutuals, and conducted a social audit of  OMLA, an Argentinian microfinance organisation. As Project Officer at Education International, he has facilitated workshops with teacher trade unions on HIV and education issues in West Africa and Latin America. He holds degrees in Human Rights (MSc) and Politics and Italian (BA) from the London School of Economics and the University of Leeds respectively

Swati Mitra
Dy. Director - Fundraising & Communications

 

Dr. Swati Mitra has recently joined MIA as the Dy Director Fundraising & Communications. Dr. Mitra has done her PH.D. from the School of Social Sciences, Jawahar Lal Nehru University New-Delhi.  She has previously worked in UN Agencies with a focus on Disaster Risk Management. Dr. Mitra has participated & Chaired sessions in several International forums around the world on Disaster Risk Management.

Program Communication has always been a part of her profile in all her earlier assignments,now she has shifted focus on fund-raising in her present assignment. She has developed a "Multi-sectoral model" that was presented at Davos,2008 and a "Supply-chain Model" that was presented at Stephenson's Disaster Management Institute, LSU, USA. Rahul Bhola
IT Officer

Rahul has more than 4 yrs experience in System Administration and Networking. He is Bachelor of Computer Applications and holds Technical Certifications from Microsoft, Cisco ,ITIL V3 / MCSE.Rahul has worked with reputed Companies like IBM and Bank of America. Rahul was responsible providing Technical Support to  Bank of America  for Teller Machines, Manual  & Automation Testing. Was handling Mainframe and Linux Based Server, and successfully handled various projects for Bank of America like Banking Deployments and Wintel Deployment.

Dr. B. Dinesh
Baliga
Medical Advisor

Dr. B. Dinesh Baliga graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in 1985. He has a vast clinical experience in surgical branches esp. accident & emergencies, Orthopaedics in various hospitals in Delhi and has also published a number of articles on Lithotripsy. He has worked for the Ministry of Health in Libya. On his return from Libya in 1998, he completed his post-graduate degree in Hospital and Health Management and since then he has been working in the field of Public Health. He has also worked in the World Health Organisation as a Surveillance Officer in the National Polio Surveillance Project till 2002. He later joined a British Charity Organisation and Skillshare International as a Public Health Specialist (Health Trainer/Development Worker) and carried out field work in remote tribal areas of Kalahandi and Koraput Districts (Orissa, India) with the aim to serve the poor and develop strategies for sustainable development amongst people below poverty line. He has set up Community Health Programmes in many remote areas of Orissa, Uttaranchal, Jharkahand and Maharashtra. He has also worked with people living with HIV and has helped setting up a network of positive people in Koraput, Orissa. He has also produced training modules, IEC materials on health specific to each location. He joined the MIA as a Medical Advisor.

Lindsey
Barone
Researcher

Lindsey joined MIA as a Researcher in August 2011. She holds a Master of Public Policy from Georgetown University in Washington, DC where she completed her thesis in micro insurance. She also holds an MBA from the University of Geneva in Geneva, Switzerland. She previously spent six months interning for the International Labour Organization. She also has professional experience in micro insurance consumer education and health policy.

Dr Nidhi
Bhatt
Researcher - Medical

Dr. Nidhi Bhatt is a science graduate with Medical (M.B.B.S.) degree and Post Graduate Diploma in Health Management from IIHMR Jaipur. Has an experience of implementing NRHM within public health facilities in Government of Gujarat as Program Coordinator. While working with Gujarat Government she also supported HPV Demonstration Project of PATH organization in Vadodara by conducting trainings on Cervical Cancer for medical and paramedical staff. Before joining MIA she worked with EngenderHealth as Program Officer and Program Manager in RCH projects like  Implement Quality Assurance of Reproductive and Child Health Services at PHCs & CHCs / Block PHCs, Sub-Centres, Out Reach in Public Health System in 13 districts of Uttaranchal and 2 districts of Jharkhand and also as Technical Specialist for Adolescent Reproductive and Sexual Health Program in Jharkhand where she has been involved in strengthening the project with technical inputs, developing project monitoring checklist on clinical aspects and building capacity of district and state stakeholders in implementing the ARSH Program in 12 districts of Jharkhand. She joined MIA in May 2011 as Researcher (Medical) for technical support on medical issues to project implementation.

Dhriti
Bhatta
Project Manager

 Dhriti is a graduate of Tufts University, where she majored in Economics and minored in Political Science. She decided to join the Micro Insurance Academy to complement the knowledge she gained in her development economics classes with exposure to fieldwork that she receives as a project manager in the organization. Before MIA, Dhriti did both quantitative and qualitative research on international migration at the Migration Policy Institute in Washington, DC. At MIA, Dhriti currently oversees the implementation and evaluation of two community based micro health insurance schemes in Banke and Dhading districts in Nepal. 

Brian
Cooper
Training Specialist

Brian joins the MIA as a Training Specialist. He holds a degree in economics and political science from The University of Dublin, Trinity College, and a masters in project management from University College Dublin, where he spent part of his studies at Beijing UIBE. His experience includes working as an intern on economic affairs at the Embassy of Ireland, Washington D.C., business development in a technology company and a project management role in a startup company. He also has volunteer experience with an Irish education-focused NGO in Dublin, and with sustainable farming projects in Patagonia, Argentina.

Sibasankar
Das
Training Specialist

After completing his Post-graduate in Science, Sibasankar completed a Masters in Journalism and Mass Communication from Berhampur University, Orissa. He has more than 18 years of experience in the NGO sector with specific skills in project design, implementation and team management. Sibasankar generally prefers to work in teams that have good organisational capacity and commitments to social causes. He demonstrates expertise in the fields of microfinance, livelihoods, capacity building and training. Further, he has specialised experience in the field of disaster management with previous involvement in the Orissa Super Cyclone and Tsunami in Tamil Nadu. Sibasankar has been involved with MIA as a Training Specialist for the last two years, working with the team responsible for implementing the community-based health insurance pilot in Orissa.

Lashita
Dhingra

Lashita has done a Masters in Philanthropy and Fundraising from New York University and holds a Masters in Business Administration. She has 10 years of work experience in the private sector and has recently joined MIA as a ‘Development Officer’.  Issues of poverty alleviation and women empowerment are close to her heart. During her Masters program she took keen interest in finding sustainable solutions for the poor particularly the bottom of the pyramid and wrote study papers. She is excited to be a part of Micro Insurance Academy and contribute through her extensive work experience along with her professional qualification.

Dr. Shikha
Dixit
Researcher

Dr. Shikha holds a PhD degree in Medical Geography, a post graduation in Geography and a PG diploma in Geo-informatics for Disaster Management and Environmental Assessment from Indian Institute of Remote Sensing, Dehradun. She has 10 years of extensive experience in application of GIS/ Remote Sensing techniques in the field of public health management. Prior to MIA she worked as a GIS analyst at Urban Health Resource Centre (New Delhi) where she was responsible for giving technical assistance to the Government of India on GIS related issues. She worked as a part time faculty at National Institute of Health and Family Welfare (New Delhi) and as a researcher at National Institute of Health Statistics (ICMR). She also worked for about 3 years at EPOS health consultant as a Programme Coordinator. Dr. Shikha has further done short term consultancies on urban health issues with Family Health International.

Dr. Shikha joined MIA as a Researcher (Spatial Analysis) and leads the spatial research activities (using innovative techniques of GIS and Remote Sensing) for the FP7-EC funded project.
 

Conor
Doyle
Researcher

Conor is an economist by training, and works on the MIA's quantitative research activities. He is currently managing quantitative research and experimental design on the three EC-FP7 funded Randomised Control Trials being managed by MIA. He also provides sampling, survey design, fieldwork and analytic support to other projects at the MIA, including those in Nepal and Rajasthan. Conor holds a BA in Economics and Politics from Trinity College Dublin, and an M.Sc. in Economics from University of Warwick, UK. He previously worked as an Overseas Development Institute fellow with the government of Sierra Leone, where he handled a variety of quantitative and policy research briefs - including welfare analyses, development of costing models for healthcare and education services, and macroeconomic forecasting.

Dr. Iddo
Dror
Advisor to Senior Management (MIA India) & Board Member (MIA International)

Dr. Iddo Dror has more than a decade’s experience in various sectors (International Development, United Nations, Academia, and Business) in assignments spanning five continents. His professional interests span development (particularly the role of financial services therein), international business and management, and graduate level teaching. He holds a PhD in Economic and Social Sciences and a Masters of Business Administration from the University of Geneva, Switzerland.

Iddo has been active in the microinsurance sector since 2005, when he started his doctoral work in this area, and relocated to India in 2007 to help launch the Micro Insurance Academy, where in his role as Director of Operations he was responsible for the strategic development and expansion of the MIA as well as overseeing the operational units (finance, human resources, resource mobilization and general administration). In October 2010, as part of a planned process of handing over responsibility and senior management positions in India from expatriates to local talent, Dr. Dror exited from the position of Director of Operations. He remains a strategic advisor to senior management, in addition to his role as Board Member of MIA International.

Sudeshna
Ghosh
Qualitative Researcher

Sudeshna holds M. Phil degree in Population Studies and has recently submitted her PhD dissertation at International Institute for Population Sciences, Mumbai. She also holds a Master’s degree in Geography and Bachelor’s degree in Education. She has about 7 years research experience in planning, execution, monitoring and management of various projects related to health and development. She is trained in both quantitative and qualitative research techniques including ethnographic studies. She has developed research proposals and survey tools, and has done monitoring, data analysis and report preparation during her work as Senior Research Executive, ORG (I), Kolkata and Research Manager, GfK MODE, Delhi. She also attended a training workshop on ‘Communicating to Policymakers on Population and Health’, organized by East West Center, Honolulu, USA. This apart, she has presented research papers at various International Conferences held in France, Austria and Pakistan. Sudeshna joined MIA as a Qualitative Researcher and manages the qualitative research activities and provides inputs related to qualitative techniques and analysis for the FP7-EC funded project.

Gupta
Training Specialist (Hindi)

Ashu Gupta holds a post graduate in sociology from Choudhary Charan Singh University. He has joined MIA with more than four years of experience in the social development sector with top-tier organizations such as WHO and SMNET (UNICEF). His areas of expertise are training, program mobilization and micro planing.  Ashu strongly believes that “only healthy societies can be peaceful societies.” As a Training Specialist at MIA, his responsibilities include contributions to workshops and training sessions, thereby building capacities amongst the target groups. He is currently pursuing an MBA in Human Resource Management from Symbiosis University.

Chanchal joined MIA from the Panasonic service center. Chanchal has 3 years of experience with Panasonic service center where she handled the front desk and took care of the administrative work of the office. At the MIA, she is the data entry operator.

Dr. Nihar

Actuarial Analyst

Dr. Nihar Jangle - Actuarial Analyst (MIA): Nihar holds a diploma and a PhD in mathematics from Free University Berlin, Germany. He recently joint MIA as an actuarial analyst being responsible for developing pricing models and performing risk analysis. During his studies he spent two years at Brown University in Providence, USA. After a year of post-doctorate studies he joined a consulting company working in the financial industry. His projects were related to risk management and monitoring credit risk (counterparty risk, issuer risk, collateral management, Basel II) for large German banks.

Deputy Director of Administration

Ashutosh Kaushik joined MIA as Deputy Director of Administration in October 2010. As a senior member of the MIA Team, he leads the administrative functions of MIA (Accounts, Finance, Statutory Compliance, Donor Reporting, Human Resource and IT). He brings with him over 13 years of rich experience in the field of Administration and Finance. He has worked in different industries starting from manufacturing to retail to BPO; and for last few years he is specializing in Administration & Finance roles in the development Sector. He has experience of working with large international multinational, multidimensional NGOs and has done executive MBA from Indian Institute of Management (IIM Calcutta). His other academic qualifications include B.com from Jiwaji University and a PG diploma in Financial Management.

Amar joined the MIA as administrative assistant from October 2008 and is in charge of the general day-to-day maintainance of the Delhi office.

Manish

Project Manager

Manish is a post-graduate in Rural Management from Xavier Institute of Social Service (Ranchi) with approximately 10 years experience in the development sector (particularly in the area of women empowerment, HIV/AIDS & Civil Society Building/networking). Previously he has worked for Gram Vikas (Orissa), State SACS (Jharkhand), Central Project Support Unit (New Delhi) and RCSHA. Manish has joined MIA from the Voluntary Action Network of India (VANI). 

Manish’s current responsibilities as a Project Manager at MIA, include coordinating and managing project activities, technical support to project stakeholders, etc.

Prasreen

Training Specialist

Prasreen is an experienced social worker with a MSW and Diploma in Theme Centered Interaction with specialization in training. He has upward of 12 years’ experience in development sector particularly in the areas of training, project development and project management. He worked with Centre for Human Resource Development (CHRD); CHILDLINE of Farook college, Calicut, HIV/AIDS intervention projects of Kudumabshree (A Government of Kerala initiative) & Malabar Vikasana Vedi , Thalessery. and with Farook Institute of Management Studies- Calicut,  Kellogg  Brown & Root (KBR), U S Army Airfield & Camp Buehring, Kuwait, Nahar international & Supreme Agros Ltd, Ludhiana.     His responsibilities in MIA are Development of training pedagogy, Training of trainers, Training process documents, Review of training programs and Coordination with partner-NGOs. He has most notable contributions are in developing business process, visual mediums for trainees like games, role plays and Full scale film on education for Community based Insurance.

Atanu

Senior researcher

Atanu is a post-graduate in Statistics from Indian Statistical Institute (Kolkata) with over 20 years of experience in commercial and development sectors (particularly in the area of health). His experience in the health sector ranges from HIV/AIDS to RCH, from improving health care delivery system to microplanning. At the MIA he works as a Researcher with the primary responsibility of providing technical support to various research initiatives and developing management information system for micro health insurance projects. Previously he has worked for GOPA-EPOS (in the Basic Health Project, Govt. of West Bengal), UNICEF (as a Consultant) and renowned NGOs like Child In Need Institute and Bhoruka Public Welfare Trust.

Rosy

Executive Secretary

Rosy has joined MIA from the Voluntary Action Network of India (VANI).  She is convent educated and has completed a secretarial course with YMCA.  Rosy has 13 years of experience working with NGOs like VANI and NCEPDP where she handled the front office and administrative work.  She joins the MIA as the Executive Secretary to the Director of Operations.

Ritu
Mendiratta
Human Resource Officer

Ritu Mendiratta has completed an MBA in HR from IGNOU, PG Diploma in Industrial Relations & Personnel Management from Bhartiya Vidya Bhawan and MA in Public Administration from Himachal University. She has 15 years of diversified experience in Operations & Human Resources.  She has worked with various industries like Manufacturing, Garments, IT, Telecom, Hospitality in addition to six years of working in the Development Sector. She has rich experience of working in HR and administration including employee recruitment, HR MIS, policies development, employee engagement, overall administration, office management, procurement, assets management, contracts and legal compliance. She joined MIA as Human Resource Officer in September 2011 and is responsible for Human Resource Management. She comes with a “Can Do” attitude and believes in the saying “Nothing is Impossible”.

Graphic Designer

Manasi is a Graduate of Delhi University and holds Book Illustration and Multimedia diplomas from Shankar's Academy of Art and Book Publishing, Sharda Ukil School of Arts, and Arena, Aptech Ltd.  She has over 5 years of experience in the development sector, notably through her work as an Artist with the American Red Cross, where she designed and prepared visually and culturally appropriate materials for children and adult survivors of crisis or disaster. In her current role, Manasi is responsible for MIA’s graphics related work, such as the production of illustrations to explain the value proposition of insurance to people challenged by illiteracy and innumeracy.

Raj Kamal
Mukherjee
Deputy Director of Training

Raj Kamal comes with experience of working in public sector banking followed by a decade of work in the microfinance sector. In the microfinance sector, he has worked with NGOs and microfinance institutions to strengthen their microfinance programs and with Sa-Dhan, the industry association to develop performance standards for microfinance institutions and in initiating sectoral reports, the 'Side by Side' and 'Quick Report' on progress and trends among microfinance institutions. He was a member of the committee set up by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India to devise accounting standards for microfinance institutions. He has conducted several training programs for NGOs and microfinance institutions on issues of governance, performance monitoring and reporting. Raj Kamal coordinates development of training processes at the MIA and works on standard setting and advisory services to MIA's clients.

Panda
Training Specialist

Priya is a post-graduate from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), Mumbai, and has earned a Masters degree in Business Administration from IGNOU. She has extensive experience in rural development both in India and abroad. She has about 10 years of experience in Programme Management, Monitoring, Evaluation, Documentation, and Training, and Capacity Building. She joined MIA as a Training Specialist. Her responsibilities includes training module development, delivery of training programmes, reviewing the training programmes and coordinating with partner NGOs.

Dr. Pradeep K.
Panda
Deputy Director of Research

Dr. Pradeep K. Panda is a population economist by training and has been associated with academic and action research for the last two decades. He has held positions at the University of Bombay, Mumbai and Centre for Development Studies, Trivandrum where he engaged in teaching and research. He has also contributed to applied research at the National Council for Applied Economic Research and the Population Council, New Delhi, and at the Institute for Rural Research and Development, Gurgaon, where he was Director of Rural Research. He has published papers in peer-reviewed journals and has undertaken empirical research on gender dimensions of poverty, employment, violence, health and human rights. In his role of Deputy Director of Research,  Dr. Panda coordinates the research activities of the MIA, and specifically leads a team of researchers for the EC-funded project on the impact assessment of community based health insurance schemes in India.

Director of Research & Training

Ralf joined the MIA from the Department for Cooperative Studies of University of Cologne (Germany), where he coordinated a European Union funded project on micro health insurance in India. Ralf has conducted extensive research on microinsurance and also consults in the same domain.  In his role of Director of Research and Training, Ralf coordinates the research and training activities of the MIA aiming to assist in the development of community based micro insurance schemes, which are integrated into the financial system. Ralf is economist by education holding a degree from University of Cologne.

Ashok Kumar

Administrative Officer

Ashok is part of the Operations Team at MIA. Ashok has been with the MIA since inception, and is a key pillar of the smooth running of the organization on a daily basis. His tasks include logistics and procurement for the MIA.

Tista Dutta
Sahoo
Development Officer

Tista has done her post graduation in Rural Development from XISS,Ranchi. She has   worked with International Organisations like Catholic Relief Service(Mumbai), DFID's Surat Malaria Project and Christian Blind Mission.(South Asia Regional Office-North) Her core competencies are in the area of project development and management. She has worked on wide range of themes like watershed management, maternal and child health, gender, community  development, malaria, disability and development. She likes seeing development from the holistic perspective. She has joined MIA, as Development Officer. Her responsibilities include fund development, managing external communication and partnerships.

Sumitra Dhal
Samanta
Project Manager

Sumitra joined the MIA after over 6 years of working in remote tribal areas of Odisha (India) where she specialised in the fields of HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, leprosy, eye care, RCH, gender, adolescence issues, and water-sanitation with a number of international agencies - LEPRA, Spanish Red Cross and UNFPA. She has experience in implementing and managing projects the field of public health. She has studied Gender and Social Work at postgraduate level and holds a BA in Law from Utkal University and a Diploma in Rural Development from IGNOU. She focuses on issues of public health, community mobilization, capacity building and IEC/BCC design.

Sumitra joined MIA as a Project Manager and she is currently working on the implementing of microinsurance schemes in Odisha.

Researcher - Livestock Insurance

Udita joined MIA in November 2010 as a Researcher in Livestock Insurance. She holds a Master of Science (MS) degree in Ecology from Utah State University, USA where she worked in areas relating to behavioural ecology, rangeland management, animal welfare and sustainable development. She also has a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Biotechnology from Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra. Udita has previous experience in various development and educational non-profit organisations such as AID (Association for India’s Development) where she volunteered as a teacher to educate young children in the slums of Noida (India), and Effect International (USA) which works towards building educational projects for poor children in India and Nepal. Udita hopes to work towards understanding the complex linkages between economic, environmental and social consequences of development. At MIA, Udita is responsible for research and development of various community-based livestock insurance products that are suitable for low-income, rural communities.

Training Specialist- Nepali

Bhawana did her masters in Ecology from Tribhuvan University Kathmandu Nepal and worked in Nepal for six years for USAID and LINKAGES Project. Under the  AusAid Scholarship she got another Masters in International Public Health (MIPH) from Sydney University Australia. After  MIPH degree she started working in India since 2005 with Futures group International and Save the Children India. Main areas of expertise are maternal child health, training, nutrition and research.

Rajesh has more than 8 years experience in System Administration and Networking. Bachelor of Science and holds Technical Certifications from Microsoft, Cisco and Diploma In Computer Hardware and Networking.  Worked with international client IT teams for business purposes. Provide technical support to International customers of ERP software Workbrain - Time & Attendance and Scheduling functional issues for Workbrain customers from USA, UK and Canada.  Experience providing technical support to international customers using Device Test Automation software iTest. iTest is the test automation tool from FanFare, a US based company, and customers include Cisco, British Telecom, Alcatel Lucent, AT&T, Juniper, and many others.   Managed the corporate VoIP systems and associated IT infrastructure. Interaction with Peoplesoft (ERP Software) Managers related Peoplesoft issues effecting analysts and production.

Researcher

Siddharth joins MIA with an MSc in Operational Research. He has worked on a project with NHSRC (under the Ministry of Health) in Haryana involving adaptation of a Balanced Scorecard for performance reporting of RCH training programmes. He has previously worked in the area of Health Informatics with an NGO (HISP India) in Jharkhand, validated pedestrian route models and undertook trend analysis on passenger movement at London Underground and worked as a Software Engineer with Infosys. A qualified journalist and an ex Space Science student he gets his most valuable education from long distance rides on his Enfield, the football field and unplanned travels. He is currently working as a researcher on Baseline surveys and other projects in the area of Performance Management of Micro Insurance Units, Integrated Risk Management and Monitoring and Evaluation.

Project Manager

Anil Thomas has done Masters in Social Work (MSW) from Barkatullah University, Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. With 14+ years of practice in development sector, he has gained experience to take challenges of this sector in planning, designing, implementing, monitoring, evaluating, training and fundraising. Anil is a certified master trainer on ‘Project Cycle Management’ and a member of ‘International Disaster Management Team’ of CBM International. In his career, he was involved in innovations on key issues related to health, education, livelihood, social, empowerment, climate change, disaster, advocacy, network and liaison which bestowed an impact on the community at large and with special focus to children, men, women, youth, adolescents and persons with disabilities.  Anil joined MIA in August 2011 as ‘Program Manager’ and will dedicate his time and efforts on implementing and managing the ‘Climate Change Project’ initiated by MIA.

Development Officer & Junior Consultant

Mackenzie joins the MIA after completing a post-graduate program in International Project Management and an Honours degree in Medical Science from the University of Western Ontario. She has previous work experience within the Canadian health care system, on community construction projects in Guatemala and for child-focused NGOs within Canada. Since joining MIA, Mackenzie has worked on consultancy projects in Tanzania, Cambodia and Nepal, and has conducted research on microinsurance, health financing and social protection. Her areas of expertise include situational analyses, project design, proposal development, and monitoring and evaluation. Mackenzie currently splits her time between MIA's Development team; working on fund development and communications, and the Advisory Services team; offering technical advice.

Film Specialist

Vishal joins the MIA with working experience in different aspects of mass communication (movie making, script writing, etc.) that he gained as a free lancer, as well as through stints with Siksha (a Delhi-based NGO) and the Aaj Tak hindi news channel. At the MIA, Vishal is directing movies which are used as mass media tools to create awareness about community based health insurance schemes. He is a Post Graduate in Economics from Ranchi University and holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Development Communication from Jamia Millia Islamia University, New Delhi.

Verma
Training Specialist (Nepali)

Alka is a graduate from DAV Degree College, Uttar Pradesh and she is pursuing a Masters in Sociology from Tribhuvan University, Nepal. She has gained extensive experience in the development sector in areas such as health education, women empowerment and advocacy against violence on women. She imparted life skills and sexual/reproductive health education to young people in Nepal through a radio programme and has experience in the management of capacity building and outreach activities. She has more than 5 years of experience in Programme Management, Monitoring & Evaluation, Documentation, and Training & Capacity Building. Alka joined the MIA as a Training Specialist (Nepali) and her responsibilities  include the development of training modules, the delivery of training programmes and the revision of MIA's training programme.
