The Micro Insurance Academy (MIA) is a project of Sarvajan Unnati Bodhini (SUB) Charitable Trust. SUB was established in New Delhi, India in 2007 to advance the development of microinsurance. In effort to achieve this, SUB created MIA as its implementing body. A dedicated group of Trustees provide strategic direction and governance to MIA’s programs and objectives.
With a lifelong experience within the insurance industry in India, Dharmendra Kumar is leading SUB with expertise, focus and vast knowledge of the benefits that insurance can bring to the poor. A convinced and committed disciple of Mahatma Gandhi and a keen observer and commentator of the development of insurance activities in the Indian subcontinent, Dharmendra Kumar has now shifted his attention from the study of the history of the insurance industry to involvement in the nascent microinsurance activity at the bottom of the pyramid in rural areas and amongst the urban poor.
Naren N. Joshi has 36 years of experience with Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), India’s largest government holding insurance company. He served at LIC in various positions until he retired as Executive Director in 1997. Post-retirement Mr. Joshi was Chief Advisor to the Dutch “Financial Services MNC” / the ING Group, and later as Chief Representative of ING Insurance International. Currently he is the Non-Executive Director on the Board of ING Vysya Life Insurance Co., based in Bangalore, India. He has also served on the Board of Governors for ASIA-Pacific Risk and Insurance Association, and as nominee Director on various company Boards in the automotive, cement, steel and metal sectors in Atlanta, USA. Mr. Joshi is a member of the Academic Advisory Boards of Birla Institute of Management Technology (BIMTECH) and the Jaipuria Institute of Management in India for their insurance-related programs. He also continues to be the Executive Director of FORTE – Foundation of Research, Training and Education in Insurance (set-up jointly by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and ING Insurance International). He has participated and presented papers in several insurance seminars – both in India and abroad, which have been widely appreciated.
Sudha Sharma holds a Masters in Hindi from the University of Ajmer and has had extensive involvement in the education sector. She brings to the Board a wealth of knowledge on women’s issues in both the rural and urban setting, and a deep cultural understanding of key issues in India.
Mr Suresh Srivastava was born on 16 May 1946 in a reputed family of Jhansi. He did B.Tech. (1969) and M.Tech. (1971) from I.I.T. Delhi and worked as engineer in private sector for 36 years before retiring from active service in 2007.2008-09, for one year he worked as an Adviser (Energy) with Development Alternative, a Delhi based NGO and completed various renewable energy projects of DA under US AID and SDC funded programs. 2007-08, as convener, he organized a one year program of ‘150th Anniversary of first war of Indian Independence, 1857’, at Jhansi. He has been an active member of IITD Alumni Association for more than 15 years and served as Secretary and President of the association. He is a founder member and Vice-president of Bundelkhand Vikas Parishad, a Delhi based registered society.He had been an active sportsman participating in chess, badminton, table tennis and volleyball.
The Trustees of SUB are aided in their mission by the founding Chairman of MIA, Prof. David M. Dror. Prof. Dror is an acclaimed international expert in microinsurance with over 35 years of experience in social protection and health financing. He served as the Social Security Specialist for the International Labour Organization from 1982 – 2003, advising on social and health insurance systems worldwide. Prof. Dror has been working in India since 2005 and has professional experience in numerous countries across Asia and Africa, including Vietnam, Bangladesh and Nepal. He was named “Personality of the Year” in 2009 by the Asia Insurance Industry for “groundbreaking research and study which has helped boost understanding of how the world’s poorest communities can benefit from microinsurance”. In 2011, he received the “Global Citizen Lifetime Achievement “Karmaveer Puraskaar” Award for Social Justice and Citizen Action, from the Indian Confederation of NGOs. Fundraising and Communication Officer
Aditi has done BA (Hons) Philosophy from Delhi University and a Master Degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) in Philosophy, Public Policy and Dev studies. She has 6 years of experience in Project Implementation, Fundraising and Communication. She has worked with Sehgal Foundation, Action Against Hunger, Help Age India, and Save the Children. Aditi has worked with rural communities on improving implementation of welfare and social security schemes of the Government through Community Participation and Advocacy. She has worked on Business Development, Account Management of large donors and Institutional Partnerships with HelpAge India and Save the Children India. She has written proposals and presented papers on her work on Social Security at different national and international forums. At MIA Aditi is responsible for Communication and Institutional Partnerships.
Atanu is a post-graduate in Statistics from Indian Statistical Institute (Kolkata) with over 20 years of experience in commercial and development sectors (particularly in the area of health). His experience in the health sector ranges from HIV/AIDS to reproductive and child health, to improving healthcare delivery system and micro planning. At MIA he works as a Senior Researcher with the primary responsibility of providing technical support to various research initiatives and developing Management Information Systems for microinsurance projects. Previously he has worked for GOPA-EPOS (in the Basic Health Project, Govt. of West Bengal), UNICEF (as a Consultant) and renowned NGOs like Child In Need Institute and Bhoruka Public Welfare Trust.
Chandan is working as a Senior Modeller for “Climate Resilience through Risk Transfer” project in MIA. He completed M.Sc. in Applied Statistics and Informatics from IIT Mumbai in 2011 after doing graduation with Statistics, Economics and Mathematics from B.H.U. He has more than 5 years of work-experience in various domains of analytics pertaining to market research. Before joining MIA, he was Associate Manager at Nielsen India office acting as chief POC from the choice analytics team for Europe, Africa and Middle-East region. He received multiple awards for his R&D works, the performance within team and grabbed positive feedbacks from Clients like P&G/ Coke/Nestle and continued being the trustworthy connect between client and consultants for pricing solutions and associated models on survey data analytics during his professional stint at Nielsen.
Dr. B. Dinesh Baliga graduated from the Armed Forces Medical College, Pune in 1985. He has a vast clinical experience in surgical branches especially accidents and emergencies, orthopaedics in various hospitals in Delhi, and has also published a number of articles on Lithotripsy. He has worked for the Ministry of Health in Libya. On his return from Libya in 1998, he completed his post-graduate degree in Hospital and Health Management and since then he has been working in the field of Public Health. Dr. Baliga has also worked in the World Health Organisation as a Surveillance Officer in the National Polio Surveillance Project until 2002. He later joined a British Charity Organisation and Skillshare International as a Public Health Specialist (Health Trainer/Development Worker) and carried out field work in remote, tribal areas of Kalahandi and Koraput districts (Odisha, India) with the aim to serve the poor and develop strategies for sustainable development amongst people living below the poverty line. He has set up Community Health Programs in many remote areas of Odisha, Uttaranchal, Jharkahand and Maharashtra. He has also worked with people living with HIV and has helped set up a network of HIV positive people in Koraput, Odisha. He has also produced training modules and IEC materials on health topics specific to each location. At MIA, Dr. Baliga serves as a Medical Advisor to Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) and health strengthening projects.
Nihar holds a diploma and a PhD in mathematics from Free University Berlin, Germany. He joined MIA as an actuarial analyst, responsible for developing pricing models and performing risk analysis. As member of MIA’s Advisory Services team he led a small project on insurance awareness and client satisfaction. Nihar is now the Director Climate Change Program for the “Climate Resilience through Risk Transfer” project which is a multi-year intervention on microinsurance solutions for climate-related risks covering health, crop, livestock and natural catastrophe risks. During his studies he spent two years at Brown University in Providence, USA. After a year of post-doctorate studies he joined a consulting company working in the financial industry. His projects were related to risk management and monitoring credit risk (counterparty risk, issuer risk, collateral management, Basel II) for large German banks.
Dr Swapna Jambhekar has graduated with a Bachelors of Homeopathic Medicine and Surgery (BHMS) from Mumbai University. She then completed her Post-graduate diploma in Hospital Administration from All India Institute of Local self-Government followed with Masters of Hospital Administration from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and Fellowship in Insurance (FIII). She has worked in the area of health micro insurance as an Administrator with overall responsibility for implementation of Uplift health mutual funds with partner organizations at the grass root level. Later on she worked as External Consultant for micro insurance and in public health with various multi-lateral agencies. She has joined MIA as a Training Specialist with the RES-RISK project.
Vaibhav is PhD in Natural Resources Management from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and TERI University, Delhi. He has worked as a Senior Researcher with Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), a renowned laboratory of DRDO. He has more than 6 years of experience in the field of cryospheric sciences, river basin hydrology, climatic variability, water quality, remote sensing and GIS and has research publications in renowned international journals.
Manasi is a Graduate of Delhi University and holds Book Illustration and Multimedia diplomas from Shankar’s Academy of Art and Book Publishing, Sharda Ukil School of Arts, and Arena, Aptech Ltd. She has over 8 years of experience in the development sector, notably through her work as an Artist with the American Red Cross, where she designed and prepared visually and culturally appropriate materials for children and adult survivors of crisis or disaster. In her current role, Manasi is responsible for MIA’s graphics related work, such as the production of annual reports, brochures, reports, and insurance education illustrations to explain the value proposition of insurance to people challenged by illiteracy and innumeracy.
Marie Helene Flatres, an engineer in Organisational Design with additional training in Carl Roger’s Person Centered Approach therapy and creative communication (Marshall Rosenberg’s model), is responsible in MIA for Quality Management System (QMS) and represents Top Management in all aspects regarding compliance with ISO 9001:2008 International Standard and works towards the efficiency of all processes of the QMS, including development of project management capacity. Marie has been with the MIA since 2012. Prior to the MIA, Marie gained work experience in project management in the IT industry and within a large international bank where she was the project management office manager. Further back, Marie was the European MIS manager of a US/based multinational company. She has worked and travelled widely in Europe and North America. Marie’s work in MIA has brought her to India for the first time.
Manoj is working as a Administrative Assistant and is in charge of the general day-to-day maintenance of the Delhi office.
Rahul has more than 4 years of experience in System Administration and Networking. He holds a Bachelor of Computer Applications and Technical Certifications from Microsoft, Cisco, ITIL V3 / MCSE. Rahul has worked with reputed companies such as IBM and Bank of America, where he was responsible providing technical support to Bank of America for teller machines, manual and automation testing. In addition, Rahul was responsible for handling Mainframe and Linux Based Server, and Banking Deployment and Wintel Deployment projects. At MIA Rahul is responsible for providing IT assistance to MIA’s team in India, and maintaining the functionality of the public server, equipment and software that supports MIA’s programs.
Ravi has 10 years’ experience in Public Health, Research, Education, Drug Development and in Energy Program in Bihar. He holds a Master Degree in Rural Development, Diploma in Marketing Management and Graduate degree with Account Honors. He has extensive experience in Project Management, Monitoring, Community Mobilization, Training, Capacity Building, Government Laisaining and Advocacy. Prior to Joining MIA, He was a Zonal Program Coordinator at PATH (Program for Appropriate technology in Health) .He has also worked for IDinsight, iOWH, Pathfinder and for UNICEF.
Rosy joined MIA from the Voluntary Action Network of India (VANI). She is convent educated and has completed a secretarial course with the YMCA. She has more than 15 years of experience working with NGOs such as VANI and NCEPDP where she handled the front office and administrative work. Rosy is a key pillar within MIA’s team, serving as the Executive Secretary and holding responsibilities in administration, scheduling, office management, logistics, and direct support to the Chairman and Managing Director.
Sachin Hans joined MIA as a Research Associate in Research Department. He holds Masters in Actuarial Economics from Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), a Diploma in Insurance Management, and Bachelors in Mathematics from Delhi University. He is a person with keen interest in research and analysis. His primary responsibilities at MIA are to provide support in developing Management Information Systems (MIS), training field staff on the implementation of MIS, and actuarial pricing of microinsurance packages. During Post Graduation he has worked on different projects such as an Overview of Health Insurance Products, Pricing Private Medical Insurance using Burning Cost Approach, and Mortality Estimation of kidney transplant patients using Survival Analysis.
Mr Sandeep Pant is a post- graduate in Commerce from Kumaon University (Nainital). He joined MIA in November 2010 as an Accounts Officer. He brings with him over 26 years of rich experience in the field of finance and accounting. His responsibilities at MIA involves Project Base Accounting, Donor Reporting, Reconciliation of Funds, Budgetary Control, Tax Management, FCRA Compliance and Audit
Human Resource Manager
Saurabh Gupta has joined MIA as an HR Manager. He has an overall experience of 9 years in HR and has worked in various sectors. He is an MBA in HR and has also done Diploma in Advance Software Technology. He believes in continuous learning and is an Out-of-the-Box thinker with a flair for identifying & adopting emerging trends. His responsibilities include managing the complete life cycle of an employee, employee engagement, drafting the HR Policies, reviewing Performance Management System and taking care of the training needs of an employee.
Vikram joined MIA as Project Manager – Nepal. He has successfully worked on the Central Government aided RSBY (Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojna) project, for the benefit of below poverty line families, covering the district of Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. He initiated public awareness and social service at the grassroots level and has been an efficient member in a healthcare organization where he held health care camps in the backward areas of the district. Brought up in Bhutan, Vikram completed his schooling in Darjeeling, graduating from Bangalore University and later went on to do his Post Graduate in Human Rights from Indian Institute of Human Rights, New Delhi. He has a passion for riding his motorcycle to support various causes (AIDS, cancer awareness, girl child education, and promoting human rights) and has covered most of the states in India, Bhutan and Nepal. At MIA Vikram is responsible for managing two Community-Based Health Insurance (CBHI) schemes in Banke and Dhading districts of Nepal. He coordinates with local partners to ensure that the CBHI schemes meet their objectives and that they are in line with donor agreements.
