The Micro Insurance Academy is a Delhi-based charitable trust dedicated to evidence-based studies, training and advisory services for microinsurance units serving the poor.
Community-based micro health insurance units represent the highest hope for the extension of insurance coverage among the uninsured poor. However, microinsurance schemes need help in customizing their insurance to the risks and conditions they face, at affordable premiums, through a process that they trust. The MIA offers innovative, context-specific solutions to meet those needs.
Our Mission
Our mission is to empower communities to play an active role in insurance while uplifting themselves out of poverty. We help reduce people’s financial vulnerabilities through relevant solutions that protect their livelihoods. Ultimately, by creating an enabling environment that links microinsurance units to reinsurance, we ensure sustainable operations of community-based micro health insurance schemes.
Our Vision
The Micro Insurance Academy believes that every person deserves access to relevant and affordable insurance. We believe that every person is insurable. Together we can make it happen.
Our History
The Micro Insurance Academy is a project of SUB (Sarvajan Unnati Bodhini), an Indian Public Charitable Trust based in New Delhi that draws from extensive experience in the Indian insurance domain. Inspired by spiritual and Gandhian principles, SUB set out to make financial services – first and foremost microinsurance – work for the poor.
For this, SUB joined hands with the Social Re project and launched the Micro Insurance Academy to support community-based micro health insurance. Community based-micro insurance has long been the focus of the “Social-Re” project and has completed in-depth projects such as “Strengthening micro health insurance units for the poor in India” in 2005-06, in South Africa in 2005, in the Philippines in 2002-03 and conceptualization of microinsurance during 2000-02.
