The Challenges Facing MIUs
Many microinsurance units, or MIUs, in India are managed independently. However, operating with little or no technical expertise means that these groups face large actuarial and organizational risks. At times, members of a microinsurance unit may have difficulty determining the appropriate amount of premium to cover certain health-related risks. For example, if many members of a group face similar yet highly dangerous occupational hazards, the overall risk may exceed the capacity of funds to pay for future healthcare expenses. This can result in the microinsurance unit becoming financially unstable if a large number of members suffer expensive illnesses all at once.
The solution in this case is two-fold:
1. Enlarge the pool of members to include individuals that are less likely to face these occupational hazards
2. Assist the microinsurance unit in developing insurance domain knowledge and dedicated IT systems in order to increase financially sustainability.
The MIA can help in both of these areas and furthermore enable communities to design benefit packages that they find relevant. We provide the knowledge and technical assistance support to achieve this transition successfully.
